Books Not Bombs
Hearts of Mercy at UCI is a supporter of the Books Not Bombs Campaign, a nationwide campaign through which students call on their universities to join the International Institute of Education’s Syria Consortium for Higher Education in Crisis to create scholarships for students displaced by conflict.
In fall 2016, we wrote resolutions that were unanimously passed by the Associated Students at UC Irvine and the University of California Students Association. Students at UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Los Angeles, UC Santa Barbara and UC Riverside have also passed similar resolutions.
The UC administration has not yet formally joined the consortium. To assist students displaced by conflict seeking to pursue higher education, we will be holding a fundraiser to provide financial grants to need-based asylum seekers in the UC system, as asylum seekers do not qualify for federal aid. Refugees and asylees who have received insufficient federal aid are also welcome to apply.
We are hopeful that our efforts will inspire other UC campuses and the entire UC administration to do more to help students displaced by conflict receive a higher education so that they can gain the education and skills they need to help rebuild their countries.
